A group of local people has recently bought the pub, completing the purchase on 1st June. All of us have known it and loved it for years, and nurse the ambition to make it one of – if not the – best pub with food in the area and, for those coming from further afield, the best place to stay and eat round here.
Over the coming months we will be making some discreet changes to make it more comfortable for everyone, without ever forgetting that it is and must remain a village pub, offering a warm welcome and friendly, professional service.
We have a new chef, Gareth, who won two AA rosettes in his last post. We will be offering dishes which honour the best of local producers, whether farmers, market gardeners or cheese-makers, and the wonderful ingredients they provide. The dishes will celebrate the changing tastes and textures of the seasons, and as well there will be old pub favourites.
We are developing a wine list which we intend will offer real value for money for a selection of grape varieties and styles, mainly from France (and not just the best-known regions), where there are numerous small and passionate growers, many using biodynamic and organic methods, producing wines with real personality and taste, so different from the bland blends which are so common these days. But there are also wonderful New World winemakers, and they will have a well-deserved place on our list as well. Do please ask for information or, if you want it, advice about our wines, and what food they best go with.
Most importantly of all, The Howard Arms exists for you, the customers. We not only welcome but seek your opinion on any aspect of your experience of the place, and will pay close attention to what you tell us.
